Oil is and has been a crucial pillar in the global energy matrix, driving economic development and shaping the geopolitical landscape since the Industrial Revolution. Although it has remained the most important primary energy source over the last six decades, it is currently facing significant challenges due to environmental concerns that require an urgent Energy Transition. This report looks at the evolution of oil since the first crisis and the future prospects for its demand, drawing on the article “The end of oil, then and now” published in March by the British weekly newspaper The Economist.
