Growing demand. The consumption of electriciy in Uruguay reached its highest level ever in 2023 at 11.8 TWh. For the third consecutive year of growth, demand increased by 1.8 % compared to the previous year, exceeding the cumulative annual rate of 1.3 % over the last ten years. Since 2013, demand has increased by 14%, rising every year with the exception of 2017, 2019 and 2020. This demand dynamic is putting pressure on the electricity system. With this in mind, the President of UTE, Silvia Emaldi, announced at the IX Latam Renovables Congress that the company has begun to consider new investments in solar power generation for 2024.
