Non-Conventional Renewables Energies have seen remarkable growth in the region over the past decade. In Argentina, Brazil, Chile, and Uruguay, production of wind, solar, geothermal, biomass, and biogas increased from 4.6 TWh in 2012 to 194.4 TWh in 2021, a 42-fold increase and rising from 0.7% to 23.1% of total regional electricity generation (excluding Paraguay, as data is not available). This strong expansion has mitigated the impact of the sharp drop in hydropower generation due to the drought that affected the region in 2021.
