Uruguay’s energy sector reached a memorable mark in September 2021, with a record monthly electricity production of 1,585 gigawatt hours (GWh). This generation peak is not due to domestic demand, but to the regional situation. Argentina and Brazil are experiencing generation problems due to the effects of the drought that has affected them since 2020. Although the drought has also affected Uruguay, the electricity matrix has been able to meet domestic demand while supplying neighboring countries, exporting a record 680 GWh in September.
